Attorney Manuel N. Camacho
Mr. Camacho obtained his Bachelor of Laws from the University of the Philippines College of Law in 1958. He has more than fifty years in the practice of law and at 77 he is still actively engaged in litigation and counseling including giving legal opinions/lectures not only to clients but to other practicing lawyers especially those who were his former students.
He fondly recalls the very first case he handled and won at the age of 27 even before he became a lawyer. He was waiting for the bar results when he took on a case before one of the Municipal Trial Courts in his province. The case arose out of the refusal of his client to pay a bet in a cock fighting game.
Over the years, Mr. Camacho has distinguished himself as a litigation attorney and as a formidable maritime and insurance lawyer. He is one of the co-founders/officers of MARLAW, an association of lawyers engaged in maritime and admiralty practice in the Philippines.
He had secured the acquittal of his clients in all cases he handled in the Sandiganbayan including reversals by the Supreme Court of two convictions in the cases of Juan Rivera vs. People of the Philippines and Mendiola vs. People and Sandiganbayan.
Previously, Mr. Camacho was a legal adviser to former Secretary Cesar Sarino of the Department of Interior and Local Government and it continued when the latter was appointed as President of the Government Service Insurance System during the Cory Aquino Administration. Mr. Camacho was also an accredited lawyer for the GSIS. Currently, Mr. Camacho is a legal adviser to the offices of Senators Edgardo Angara and Miriam Defensor-Santiago.
In his appellate practice, the Supreme Court has constantly upheld the cases handled by Mr. Camacho. Many of these successful cases can be found in the Supreme Court Reports Annotated.
Mr. Camacho was also a professor at the University of the Philippines College of Law where he taught Transportation Law, Special Proceedings and Credit Transactions.
